Sunderland Celebrates Children’s Centre Opening

As Sunderland City Council continues to help every child living in the City to reach their full potential, families from across Sunderland are set to benefit as Sunderland’s latest Children’s Centre was officially launched in September. To mark the official opening of Sunderland Children’s Centre Millfield families enjoyed a day of family fun at the new centre.

New Website Improves Support for Sunderland Families

Sunderland Children’s Centres have launched a new website designed to offer families with young children improved support, while making it simpler and easier for them to access important information.
 
The new Sunderland Children’s Centre website allows parents/carers, volunteers and professionals working in childcare to access a range of useful information and advice on a number of topics, including Children’s Centre services, information on training and employment opportunities as well as advice for daycare providers.

2. Information for Parents

Additional Help for Parents on Low Incomes

Working Tax Credit provides a top up to wages for those on low incomes. Extra help is available for working parents through a childcare element, which can help with the cost of registered or approved childcare. It can offer up to 80% towards the costs of eligible childcare, up to a maximum level of £175 per week for one child and £300 per week for two or more children.

Benefits Advice at Baby Days

The Child Benefit Agency has joined together with selected Sunderland Children’s Centres' Baby Days clinics to help offer parents additional support. Throughout November and December representatives from the Child Benefit Agency will attend a number of Baby Days sessions to help advise parents on claiming child benefits and which are open to them.

Triple P Programme Supporting Sunderland Parents

Triple P is a positive parenting programme, helping parents to recognise the causes of common child behaviour and encourage desirable behaviour in children.

There is no right or wrong way to be a parent, but Triple P offers information, support and practical answers to everyday parenting concerns. There are a variety of programmes available which are tailored to meet the individual needs of both parent and child.

3. Information for Professionals

Early Years: Leading to Excellence Report

The Early Years: Leading to Excellence review was published by Ofsted in August. The report reviews childcare and early years provision at the end of Ofsted’s three-year cycle of inspections. It also looks at good practice, in how providers organise, lead and manage their settings to promote positive experiences and outcomes for children. The Early Years: Leading to Excellence is the final of a series of three reports on how providers are promoting the Every Child Matters outcomes for children.

Everything You Need to Know About EYFS

As the Early Years Foundation Stage is now statuary across the UK the DCSF has published the EYFS: Everything You Need to Know document. Aimed at professionals the guide explains and clarifies every aspect of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

New Training Programme Available

The training programme: Training for Practitioners Working in Early Years and Extended Services (0-19) is now available from the Jobs in Childcare website. Please take the time to browse through the extensive range of courses provided within the programme and send your booking form to the address shown on the bottom of the webpage.

NCFE Safeguarding Course Now Available

The Extended Services and Attendance Group in partnership with City of Sunderland College are pleased to promote the distance learning NCFE Level 2 Award in Safeguarding Children and Young People Course.
The course consists of three modules and aims to develop the knowledge and skills that are needed to safeguard the welfare of children and young people. For more details please contact Cath Scott on 0191 553 5657 or email the Workforce Development Team  

Training Course Cancellation Policy

Just a quick reminder, the Professional Development Team have now implemented a cancellation policy for all delegates who receive a confirmed place on any course but fail to attend without cancelling their place. The £25 fee charged will go towards additional training courses for the benefit of the Early Years and Childcare workforce.
