Let's all say "hello" to the National Year of Communication

Sunderland Children’s Centres are encouraging families to babble and chatter, as part of a drive to encourage the development of children’s communication skills from an early age.
As part of the year-long national ‘Hello’ campaign, run by the Communication Trust, Sure Start centres across the city will be hosting all kinds of free fun events during 2011 to promote speech and language development, including sing-alongs and themed activities.
Parents are also being encouraged play their part at home too, by sharing a story, starting conversations and singing rhymes together whenever possible.

Here are some great ways to develop your child’s communication skills:
- Talk to your child about what you’re doing throughout the day
- Recognise gurgles, smiles and even arm and leg movements as their way of communicating with you
- Have fun with nursery rhymes and songs, particularly those with actions
- Talk about a book you’ve read or a television programme you’ve watched together
- Sing to them. Don’t worry about how bad you sound – they’ll love it
- Pop along to Time for Rhyme at your local Children’s Centre – a great way to help your child’s confidence and speech develop
